I picked out my first tattoo while at a shop owned by friends of the family. Everyone laughed, not at the unicorn and rainbow design but because I was only eight years old. It was also later that same year I say a heavily tattooed woman for the first time. I had known her for many years and was delighted by the extensive work that had been started on her. I still remember the first time I saw her back. Her entire back was covered with two colorful pheasants and her three-quarter sleeves were beautiful chrysanthemums with gray water and bubbles. She won "Best Tattooed Female" at the first National Convention in 1979. Her tattoos changed my whole life; I too wanted to be heavily tattooed. By the time I turned 18 my taste had changed and I didn't get that unicorn I wanted ten years before, but I did start getting tattooed on a regular basis.

Now at 30, my Godfather Bill Hannong has started the outlines on my sleeves. We have started both arms with fuchsia flowers and chrysanthemums floating in gray water. Very similar to the "Best Tattooed Female of 1979. That woman whom I love and respect who is my Godmother, Theresa Hannong.

I've been working at Fort Myers Beach Tattoo Studio. I'm at the end of my traditional apprenticeship under Bill Hannong, I look forward to many more years working here and getting tattooed by him.
